An update on the Datavisor 80 already! (Click here if you have yet to see the original post)
After the initial excitement of receiving this beast was over it became clear that it was in desperate need of some serious TLC. It had definitely experienced some use and abuse over the years! For example, the right ocular (viewing optics assembly) was mis-aligned, the eye shroud was torn and hanging off the unit and the left IPD adjustment knob was completely missing! Not to mention the entire unit was completely covered in filth.
Well it took a bit of elbow grease (and some part swapping from an old Datavisor Hires) but she's just about looking brand new now. ;)
For those detail fenatics (like myself) below are some of the repairs I did with pictures ;)
Before we get started I'd like to take a moment to express how important it is to have a nutirional snack to get the brain going before getting into any serious technical work.

Now then.. on to the fixin...
First we tackle the eye shroud!

Here we can see where the eye shroud is torn and needs repair.

For such an advanced problem we'll need to use an advanced solution: Advanced Formula Krazy Glue! Funny enough this stuff actually did a really good job. Use sparingly though - just enough to line the tear itself.

Here we see the tear fixed...in under 3 seconds too. Gotta love Krazy Glue. ;) One thing to note: The glue itself wound up drying a very contrasting white. So, I simply used a sharpi to "paint" over it.
Here we have the finished product placed back on the HMD and actually fastened into place - rather than just hanging off as it was when it arrived.

And another view of the completed shroud.
Now for the IPD adjustment knobs:

Here we see what the IPD adjustment knob for the Datavisor 80 is supposed to look like.

...and here unfortunatley is what it looks like when one is missing.

We are in luck, however! As the old Datavisor HiRes has a pair that actually fit the same mount points! These actually have a nice rubber coating to them and are more comfortable than the DV 80's industrial knobs which makes a nice added bonus!

A close up of the new knob mounted.

And here we are! Both adjustment knobs mounted and ready to go. I actually like the way they look better. ;)
Lastly... What is that on the crown of the head mount?

Well, it's obviously some type of glue, etc.. but despite my best efforts I wasn't able to make any type of dent in it.

So, it's back to scavenge from the poor ol' Datavisor HiRes again. This time we're steeling it's nice *new* looking head mount. ;)

Whata-ya-know... a perfect fit! I'd definitely say that this looks better by far. ;)
Repairs all done and the grime scrubbed off! Sweet!

Damn! Feels like a new car!

What a beast!

The Datavisor 80's new home.

A quick shot of the VCU (Video Control Unit) for those wondering what it plugged into. It goes from there out to two "5 Wire BNC to VGA" adapter cables and then finally to DVI via two DVI adapters.
Note: The video cards that support N-Vision Datavisor HMDs natively on the PC platform are Wildcat cards running Parallel Color Field Sequential. I can provide driver details, etc. if anyone's interested, etc.

That's one sexy Head Mounted Display! Lol. ;)
That's all for now. ;)
